by William Shakespeare

What's funny about this comedy? "A comedy is a tragedy without bodies". Only according to this definition can the "merchant of Venice" be described as a comedy. Shakespeare impressively shows us, as otherwise only in the royal dramas, how social being shapes consciousness. A modern state, which sees itself as a place of humanism, threatens to fail due to its own rules.

The Shakespeare Company Berlin sees exciting parallels to today's Europe and dares here far into the political.

With the proven means of rapid transformation, comedic, folk play, and music, we examine the difficult relationship between individual law and state reason, and make a sensual plea for the power of grace arising out of love.
