Psychic Liberation (PL) is a label founded in 2013 and run by Miguel Alvariño under the name Primitive Language as a cassette and record store project in New York.
Since 2019 it has been run by Nick Klein under the name Psychic Liberation in Europe, with regular guest appearances at the Roter Salon of the Volkbühne.
On November 30th Tongue Depressor, Jake Muir and Max Eilbacher will perform - curated by Nick Klein.
Max Eilbacher
Max Eilbacher works with sound: compositions, musical performances, conceptual systems, perceptual choreographies, installations and theoretical sculptures.
A common concern in the works is the investigation of the inextricable and complex relationship between sound and experience. He has performed with various groups, presented solo compositions, abstract electronic media and installations at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Kitchen, the Issue Project Room, the Guggenheim, the Center Pompidou and SOUP.
He has released, collaborated with and contributed to numerous records on labels such as Portraits INA GRM, Spectrum Spools, Editions Mego, RVNG, Catch Wave, Superpang, Thrill Jockey, Drag City, Unseen Worlds and PL.
Jake Muir
Jake Muir is a Berlin-based sound artist, DJ and field recordist. He approaches his practice primarily as a listener, carefully curating, layering and editing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his experiences and influences.
Using investigative software methods, DJ techniques and technical skill, Muir creates deeply personal sound art that fluidly crosses genre membranes, provokes thought and sometimes induces psychedelic states.
With 2023's Bathhouse Blues, Muir has crafted his most personal statement yet, examining gay cruising culture and its implications. Inspired by a series of long mixtapes Muir put together to evoke the sensuality of the gay bathhouse experience, the album itself came about after an invitation from Paris-based GRM to perform at their FOCUS #4 concert.
Muir used this opportunity to explore the cultural undercurrents of the gay lifestyle and the pleasures associated with it, sourcing his sounds from old porn soundtracks. Infused with his mischievous sense of humor, the material is a testament to Muir's devotion to introspection and constant research, a distinctive statement that encourages deep listening without ever forcing it.
Tongue Depressor
Tongue Depressor is the duo of Henry Birdsey and Zach Rowden. Using a wide range of instruments, they write, improvise and perform music that draws from the realms of drone, noise and church music, often using microtonal tunings.
