16th to 19th Century European Painting

The picture gallery shows twelve paintings from the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art. The presentation provides an outlook on a large special exhibition that will bring around 60 paintings from Odessa into dialogue with works from the Berlin collections from January 2025. The cooperation project is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media.

From Odessa to Berlin – a cooperation project

Due to the close contact with the painting collections of the State Museums in Berlin, the Odessa Museum for Western and Eastern Art, the Berlin Picture Gallery and the Alte Nationalgalerie initiated a cooperation project. The aim is a large special exhibition in which the works from Odessa are brought into dialogue with paintings from the Berlin holdings. In September 2023, 74 major works from the painting collection of the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art were brought from Ukraine to Berlin. In the picture gallery they are now being examined from an art historical perspective, treated for conservation, framed and prepared for the exhibition.

Opening in the Picture Gallery: Twelve paintings from Odessa

The cooperation is an expression of the close cultural relations between Germany and Ukraine. In order to present the project to a broader public, the Gemäldegalerie is showing a special presentation with twelve selected works from February 13th to April 28th, 2024.

The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art

The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art, founded in 1923, houses a broad collection of art and cultural history. This collection is part of Ukraine's cultural identity and has numerous references to Western European collections. Nevertheless, it is little known in Western Europe.

Russian attack on Ukraine

Shortly after the start of the Russian war of aggression, the Odessa Museum's most important paintings were taken to a Ukrainian emergency storage facility to protect them. These are works from the 16th to 19th centuries, including pictures by important artists such as Francesco Granacci, Frans Hals, Roelant Savery, Bernardo Strozzi, Cornelis de Heem, Alessandro Magnasco, Andreas Achenbach and Frits Thaulow.

Curatorial team

“Start – From Odessa to Berlin. Painting from the 16th to the 19th Century” is curated by Sabine Lata, research assistant at the Gemäldegalerie, and conserved by the restorers Anja Lindner-Michael and Thuja Seidel.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media.
