by Sarah Kane
“Phaedra's Love” by Sarah Kane, directed by Jared Lorenzo, is a bold contemporary take on the myth of Phaedra and Hippolytus. Set in the world of modern royalty, it explores themes of power, desire, and familial dysfunction. Prince Hippolytus, disillusioned and apathetic, is the center of his stepmother Phaedra's obsessive love.
Her forbidden desire triggers a series of tragic events, unraveling the royal family's facade. The play starkly portrays the brutality of human emotions, with raw and provocative scenes. Secrets are unveiled, leading to the disintegration of relationships.
Characters confront their deepest flaws and vulnerabilities. The modern setting amplifies the play's relevance to contemporary issues of identity and morality.
Kane's unflinching dialogue highlights the timeless nature of these human struggles. "Phaedra's Love" is a powerful exploration of love's complexities and the impact of unchecked desires.
Our ensemble aims to captivate theatre-goers who appreciate powerful and thought-provoking performances. We will integrate movement, voice, puppetry, and innovative stage design to create a memorable and immersive experience.
Using the tools and exercises from Jane Drake Brody's "Acting, Archetype, & Neuroscience: Superscenes for Rehearsal and Performance," we will explore character and performance in a deeply impactful way through archetypes and myth.
