Monteverdi & Women of Love

PANORAMA is a new interdisciplinary performance format conceived by the composer and bassoonist Burak Özdemir as a vibrant, 360-degree space for encounter. Music, movement, poetry and improvisation come together, without the conventional division between stage and audience.

The first instalment will open the new season of Musica Sequenza on 11 October 2026 at the Emmaus Church in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

‘Monteverdi & Donne d’Amore’ centres on the music of Claudio Monteverdi, as well as works by forgotten female composers of the Italian Renaissance and early Baroque periods: Barbara Strozzi and Francesca Caccini. PANORAMA’s musical world moves freely through the centuries and across cultures. Byzantine chant, early polyphony, the Baroque repertoire, folk traditions and contemporary composition can coexist – not as historical relics, but as living voices within an ongoing human dialogue.

Figures such as Dante and Aşık Veysel become points of connection between different eras, geographical spaces and forms of expression. PANORAMA brings these voices back into the present. Together with the soprano Laura Barchetti and the dancer and choreographer Banu Pekol, a dialogue emerges between historical music, Dante’s poetic world and current social issues.

Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, PANORAMA creates a temporary landscape in which artists connect with one another through listening, movement and time spent together. Artists take up different positions within the space, surrounding the audience and occasionally moving through the room. The performance unfolds as a sequence of musical ‘islands’: composed works emerge, recede and overlap with guided improvisations, allowing new relationships and atmospheres to emerge in real time.

Banu Pekol’s choreography combines personal experience with these historical perspectives. Drawing on her roots in Istanbul, she explores the fragility of women’s rights and creates a physical space for memory, vulnerability and resistance. In this process, dance becomes a language in its own right, making social experiences visible.

PANORAMA is conceived as an open-ended format capable of engaging with different spaces and bringing together artists from diverse traditions and disciplines. Each edition is unique, yet the fundamental intention remains the same: to explore what it means to be human together, here and now.
