The punishment is damn high: Banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) gets two life sentences for allegedly murdering his wife. He has to go to Shawshank Prison, where he meets Red (Morgan Freeman) and begins a close friendship with him. At first, Red doesn't buy his protestations of innocence, but Andy's knowledge of human nature and negotiating skills make a lasting impression on him. Nevertheless, the time in prison is hard, for example because of frequent sexual assaults. At least Andy succeeds in convincing the brutal prison guards of his broad knowledge of tax law and thus in making them dependent on him.
