Horror event, immersive theatre, performance and political debate
From their encounter with these spirits, Jos Porath, Melody Pasanideh and Wanja Neite have crafted a horror experience that transcends boundaries and promises its audience that, beyond these boundaries, they will discover more about themselves and their own fears.
In the narrative of NIGHTCRAWLERS, the sleazy businessman Holger advertises an unforgettable Halloween for the hardened. Together with his henchmen: ‘the perfect companions for the darkest nights of the year’. And the nights are truly dark. For it quickly becomes clear that something is amiss with Holger and ‘his crew’, that there is more to it than meets the eye.
At a secret location in Neukölln, an installation creates a dense microcosm where things are (not) quite as they seem. From 29 to 31 October, Berlin’s only queer horror experience focuses on interactive storytelling and deep immersion involving all the senses. The experience takes place in small groups of up to four people and just as many performers; a high-intensity session lasts around an hour. The experience gets under your skin – and can leave its mark: anyone taking part should not wear an outfit they want to keep intact. And above all, you should memorise the safeword well.
For four years, NIGHTCRAWLERS has been posing the question to its audience: ‘Do you want to live deliciously?’ In the search for an answer, the experience blurs the boundaries between unease and desire. As post-migrant and queer individuals, however, Porath, Pasanideh and Neite are this time confronting a fear that cannot be reinterpreted or reframed. In addressing the current horror of advancing fascism, a comforting resolution with a predictable punchline is not NIGHTCRAWLERS’ aim. The show is not a Nazi role-play in which the setting serves merely as a generic horror genre. Rather, it is an attempt to look the horror in the eye. And also to confront their own involvement as people who grew up in Germany and have not remained untouched by this legacy. Without cynicism, but with a certain mischievousness, the ‘blood and soil’ myth is dismantled with a folding spade.
Perhaps there is something else beyond the depths of fear. The nights are dark. That’s the brilliant thing about it.
