The new building of the National Library of Israel (NLI), designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, was opened on 29 October 2023.

Situated on Jerusalem's Museum Mile and opposite the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, the National Library of Israel also aims to establish itself as an important cultural institution and educational centre for a broad public. In his lecture, Stefan Litt presents the library, its traditions, its collection mission and the work in the new building.

Stefan Litt, born in Cottbus, is a qualified historian and, as an archive librarian at the National Library of Israel, is responsible for the German-language estates, including those of Max Brod, Martin Buber, Franz Kafka, Else Lasker-Schüler, Gerschom Scholem and Stefan Zweig. Since 2018, Litt has also been curator for general humanities.

The collections of the National Library of Israel tell the historical, cultural and intellectual story of the Jewish people, the state of Israel and the country of Israel and its region over the centuries. The four core collections are orientated towards this: Israel, Judaica, Islam and the Middle East and Humanities.

Highlights include important manuscript works by greats such as Maimonides and Sir Isaac Newton, exquisite Islamic manuscripts from the 9th century, impressive medieval Christian devotional texts and personal archives of leading cultural and intellectual figures.
