What to do if the grandparents were convinced Nazis? How do I deal with it when I realize that I myself have been brought up and socialized in the inhumane tradition of the perpetrators? Can I break away from my roots?

In search of answers, the author Veronica Frenzel traveled to Auschwitz, Kiev and Vienna. She met with Nazi descendants and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, did anti-racism training and spoke to psychotherapists who specialize in long-term effects of the Nazi regime. After that, she also met her twin sister, who was born with a disability.

That evening, she spoke to the journalist Ariane Bemmer about the process that Veronica Frenzel documented in her book "My day begins in your shadow" (Goldmann, 2022). Likewise, it will also be about the legacy of the ancestors that overshadows every encounter, as well as the life task of escaping this shadow.
