Mayan resistance against the train of death - a conversation with Angel Sulub. The so-called “Tren Maya” (“Maya Train”) in southeastern Mexico is scheduled to be completed this year. The 1,500-kilometer-long route is said to boost the local economy by connecting the tourist-attractive seaside resorts of Mexico's Caribbean coast and the Mayan ruins.
But what is presented as progress by the Mexican government with the support of German investors such as Deutsche Bahn means, above all, destruction of the rainforest, disregard for the rights of indigenous peoples, land grabbing and expulsion, as well as additional militarization in one of the most conflict-ridden regions of the country.
In April of this year, as part of the Polinizadorxs film screening, they had the opportunity to learn more about the expected destruction caused by the cynically named “Tren Maya”, but also about the resistance against it. At that time they were able to connect Angel Sulub, a Mayan activist from Quintana Roo, online. Now they are very lucky that he is personally in Berlin to share what the current status is in the fight against this train of death.
The conversation will take place in English and Spanish. If necessary, they can also offer translation into German.
