"Who is the fairest in all the land, Mary or me?" That's what the historical Elizabeth I actually once asked the Scottish envoy.
We usually think of kings as absolute rulers, but we are particularly interested in how they themselves, with their private desires, are squeezed into the corset of the reason of state. How do people deal with this?
"The kings are only slaves of their status", "My virgin freedom I shall give for my people, and the master is imposed on me". This laments in different variations Queen Elizabeth I. Thus, her body is also an object of politics. And so the competition between Mary and Elizabeth is also a duel of self-perception and suppressed physicalities. In this production, they relate the concept of beauty and ugliness to a deadly situation - to the execution of Mary Stuart as a legendary beauty.
