Maki and Associates, Tokio

The Museum Reinhard Ernst, which will open in spring 2023 in downtown Wiesbaden, will display Reinhard Ernst's private collection of abstract art on 8,910 square meters. Fully funded by the Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation, the project is the result of a planning process that began in 2010 and the long-standing friendship between Reinhard Ernst and Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki.

The exhibition "Making the Museum Reinhard Ernst" focuses not on finished objects or images, but on the process of creating the building. It thus focuses not so much on the presentation, but on "thinking, making and building," according to Fumihiko Maki.

Numerous sketches, drawings and models by Maki and Associates as well as artefacts and videos provide insights into the complex process of creating the new building in four thematic quadrants - context, form, detail and construction.

The exhibits shown in the four thematic quadrants in the Aedes Architekturforum are complemented by photographs by Klaus Helbig and Frank Marburger, who documented the creation of the museum from the very beginning.
