In Dialoge with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
In 1922, Lise Gujer met the Brücke artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos. Shortly after this meeting, she began producing tapestries based on his designs. A close collaboration developed between the two, which lasted - with a few interruptions - until Kirchner’s suicide in 1938 and led to the production of around 30 tapestries.
Gujer proved to be an ideal sparring partner for Kirchner, who changed his own painting style in the following years as a result of this successful collaboration and developed a more two-dimensional style, the so-called “carpet style”.
This is the first exhibition in more than 20 years to be dedicated to Gujer’s work.
In addition to the various versions of the individual knitted fabrics, the exhibition will also show the unique preparatory works, which allow a differentiated view of the collaboration between Gujer and Kirchner.
The exhibition and the accompanying publication are being produced in close collaboration with the Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur.
