Liliom, a carousel barker at the funfair known all over town, meets Julie, a servant girl and his fateful love, while working on the carousel. Together, they risk their jobs out of longing for a life without exploitation. Once unemployed, Liliom feels increasingly humiliated. He starts to lash out and Julie too is the victim of his violence.

When she gets pregnant, the economic desperation of the expectant couple worsens and Liliom is persuaded to take part in a robbery by his shady friend. When the robbery goes wrong, Liliom stabs himself. A court awaits him in the afterlife, which grants him a second chance on Earth after sixteen years of purgatory.

Can a person change?

German-Hungarian writer Terézia Mora has created a new translation of the most famous play by the Hungarian dramatist Molnár from 1909 for the Berliner Ensemble. Director Christina Tscharyiski places the focus on a society where people are at the mercy of the violent carousal of social injustice like figures in a shooting gallery and at the same time reproduce it.
