East and West - a never-ending story?

This year marks 35 years since Germany was reunified. But the relationship between East and West is still hotly debated - often loudly and with little insight, including blame. One person who ensures understanding and communication in an objective and at the same time vivid way is the well-known sociologist Steffen Mau, professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In this edition of the event series "Let's talk about", he talks to Futurium director Stefan Brandt about his findings.

Clichés about the other part of Germany persist even 35 years after the peaceful revolution and reunification. Differences in various areas can even be proven statistically. Are there really two countries in one? Has the project of unity failed?

The Berlin sociologist Steffen Mau, who himself grew up in the GDR, has been dealing with the topic for years. He says that the democratic potential of the protest movement at the time - grassroots democratic approaches, for example - was not used enough. His contributions to research and debate are factually based, precise and at the same time vivid. They offer new perspectives and unusual suggestions.

With Futurium director Stefan Brandt, Steffen Mau discusses the circumstances and sensitivities in East and West Germany: about what unites them and what is special about them, about prejudices and facts, about the East German path from the Peaceful Revolution to today.

And of course it is also about the future:

  • Will we ever grow together completely?
  • Is the difference perhaps also an opportunity to find new ways together?
  • What can we learn from the protest movement in the GDR for a common future?

Discuss and develop ideas together for a cliché-free coexistence in a common Germany.
