From Mask Dance to a Movement of Modernity
The Korean Cultural Center warmly invites you to the performance “Korea in Focus – Tal*Chum: From Mask Dance to a Movement of Modernity” on Friday, August 15th at Metropol Berlin.
Talchum [tʰal.t͡ʃum], the traditional Korean mask dance, is at the heart of this special evening.
The event begins with traditional Korean mask dances—including the Andong Hahoe Talchum, an art form inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2022, as well as the Bongsan Talchum and Goseong Mundungbuk dances, both recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea. These art forms combine music, dance, theater, and social satire to create a unique, immersive experience.
The program then unfolds through the spirited Sanjo dance and the expressive Deotbaegi dance, culminating in contemporary dance forms—an exquisitely composed choreography bridging tradition and modernity.
Presented by outstanding Talchum masters and dancers, the audience will experience the vitality, rhythmic dynamism, and the aesthetic values of respect and harmony that permeate Korea’s cultural heritage.
Seven renowned artists from Korea will take part in the performance:
Seunghun Jang (artistic director), Hobin Park, Changyeol Heop, Juwon Lee, Minhoo Lee, Heeyoun Hwang, and Eunjung Jang. The evening will be accompanied by explanatory commentary from artistic director Jang Seunghun, translated into German.
Free admission, registration required
