a city tour in postcards. Lecture by Ben Kaden

In 1966, the artist Ed Ruscha photographed every building on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. The first result was a seven-and-a-half-meter-long leporello entitled “Every Building on the Sunset Strip,” which is considered a key work of photographic conceptual art. Another result was and is that his approach inspired numerous subsequent works.

The program “Every House on Karl-Marx-Allee” is a special example of this. Philocartist Ben Kaden transfers the process of completely photographically documenting a street to Karl-Marx-Allee, which stretches from Alexanderplatz to Frankfurter Tor. Not with his own photographs, however, but based on postcards issued in the GDR.
