Follow the trail of the major Jewish businesses along the Spree that played a decisive role in shaping industrial Berlin from the mid-19th century onward, until they met a brutal end under the Nazis.
This bus tour explores the economic, technical, and social conditions that both enabled and limited the rise of Jewish businesses. The relationships that manufacturers and their families had with Judaism varied greatly. Some had converted to Christianity generations earlier. The Nazis indiscriminately discriminated against, persecuted, and murdered them as “Jewish.” The tour highlights the immense loss that the demise of Jewish economic and industrial enterprises meant for Berlin—a loss whose effects are still felt today.
The tour leads from the James Simon Gallery in Berlin’s Mitte district—heading east toward Berlin Köpenick—with 16 stops and four disembarkations. The destination is the historic AEG industrial site in Schöneweide, concluding at the Industriesalon with coffee and pastries.
