In November, we welcome one of the veterans of Berlin's contemporary jazz scene on stage at the Brotfabrik: saxophonist Dirk Engelhardt. His entry into professional jazz began with his studies in West Berlin at the University of Arts.
In the rather bizarre and creative era 1980-1988, he was a member of such diverse bands like the noise/art rock/new wave/or so formation ‘Leningrad Sandwich’ around the later ‘Tresor’ founder Dimitri Hegemann as well as Bardo Henning's avant-garde big band ‘Experimenti Berlin’. He has played with the latter at numerous national and international festivals such as Jazzfest Berlin, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Pori/Finland and many more.
His own project ‘Lilo’ resulted from his collaboration with the pianist Ludwig Endesfelder, who had travelled from East Berlin and with whom he played in West Germany, France (Nancy Jazz Pulsations), Poland (Jazz Nad Odra) and also a concert with Albert Mangelsdorff. Dirk Engelhardt played in Berlin in squats in Kreuzberg, on the street and in endless sessions at Tacheles, Frannz Club, Acud and Quasimodo. He played with Gebhard Ullmann and even before reunification with the Polish drummer Jacek Pelc. He lived in New York and Paris, where he became intensively involved with the music of the African continent, from which the ‘Radio Marrakesh’ project emerged. He was also a member of the band ‘Embryo’.
