In or not in? Since 1966, since the legendary final at Wembley, Germany and England have had one of the greatest rivalries in world football. It is lived with passion, especially on the English side, because duels with Germany stand for both the English triumph at the 1966 World Cup and the constant tragic failure, from 66 through 1990 to 2010.

But a lot has also changed: Jürgen Klopp, Ilkay Gündogan and Per Mertesacker have become German ambassadors on the island, and some Englishmen find what they miss at home in the Bundesliga.

Hendrik Buchheister, born in 1986, is a freelance sports journalist and has lived in Manchester since 2017. He writes about English football for German online and print media such as Spiegel, Sportschau, RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland and Funke-Mediengruppe. At the rescheduled Euro 2020, he witnessed at Wembley Stadium how England won an important tournament game against Germany for the first time since 1966.
