works by Enescu, Liszt & Mendelssohn Bartholdy

With its folksy and stirring romantic elements, the Romanian Rhapsodies ensured George Enescu's reputation as the re-founder of the Romanian national school. Enescu is best known to the general public for works inspired by the folk music of his homeland.

Liszt's “Dance of Death” is emotional, those six variations on the Gregorian melody of the aggressive “Dies irae” sequence from the funeral mass. Mendelssohn's "Scottish" symphony is set in gloomy natural and historical realms.
