Among Berlin’s villa neighborhoods, one stands out to this day: Grunewald, conveniently located between City West and Berlin’s most famous forest. With the backing of Chancellor Bismarck, wealthy Berliners began settling here in 1889, enjoying the tranquility of their vast estates while also taking advantage of the neighborhood’s proximity to Kurfürstendamm.

Among the most famous residents were the industrialist and Reich Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, the publisher Samuel Fischer, the Mendelssohn banking family, as well as the dancer Isadora Duncan, film director Murnau, and the writersVicki Baum and Hermann Sudermann.

The tour takes you to the idyllic corners of this villa suburb, to well-preserved stately mansions, picturesque lakes, and places steeped in both personal anecdotes and major historical events.

  • Tour starting at Hagenplatz (Bus M 19, or a short walk from the Grunewald S-Bahn station)
