Address

Museumsverbund Pankow (Prenzlauer Allee)

Prenzlauer Allee 227 10405  Berlin

In addition to a greeting from District Mayor Sören Benn, Jürgen Hohmuth introduces the exhibition and various authors read the book of the same title »Graustufen«. It sings: Hans-Eckardt Wenzel.

Almost 30 years after its end, the history of the GDR is still shaped by clichés and the conflict over interpretative sovereignty. It is usually undisputed that the long arm of the state through its organization and control mechanisms in very large parts reached deep into the private life of the population and shaped it. Accordingly, everyday life provided the framework for adaptation and resistance of its citizens. Like a blueprint, it shows the relationship between the state and its citizens, thus constantly referring to the private sphere and the big picture of the system.

The exhibition shows the everyday life of the GDR from three perspectives: photos, literary texts and historical objects. The largely black-and-white photos by photographer Jürgen Hohmuth from the 70s and 80s document a panopticon of scenes of everyday life in the GDR, showing flats, shops, workplaces, leisure places and people in comical, serious and politically influenced everyday scenes. The historical photos are currently commented on by well-known and unknown GDR writers. Poems, novels, anecdotes, narratives, and historical objects interact with the photographs to relate the past to the past.

The exhibition will be open from 7 June 2019 until 19 January 2020, Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission is free.
