GAZINO BERLIN

A scenic-musical journey through time between Bosporus and Spree - in two parts. Based on the novel by Emine Sevgi Özdamar in a stage version by Gökşen Güntel.

The story of an unusual young woman from Turkey in the fifties to Berlin today unfolds along the songs of times gone by. A path of life between cultures, between the Bosporus and the Spree - always in search, always halfway. "I got on the train to Germany, and many other women got on as well. There was only one man who got on, it was the train conductor. He distributed a plastic jug of water, a package of food, 112 DM, which were part of our monthly wage, and a book.

The book was called: "Handbook for the workers who go to work abroad." From Emine Sevgi Özdamar's "Sun Halfway Through" And so we follow the young woman from Emine Sevgi Özdamar's great migration and Berlin trilogy "Sun Halfway" on her journey. We relive her childhood and youth in the still young Turkish Republic, between the old myths, the necromancy and the temptations of modernity with its cinema films and nightclubs. We experience her alone, barely grown up, coming to West Berlin as a guest worker, her factory work, her homesickness, the old Berlin dance halls, her first love, the student unrest and her own awakening. We return with her to Istanbul, where she follows her dream of going to drama school.

But: the outbreak of student revolts and the ensuing state terror turn her life dream into a nightmare. And again we follow her on the train to Germany and finally her stay in a foreign country. Gazino Berlin takes a look at another decade in four parts. Each part focuses on the songs and longings of the respective time. The experiences of the first generation and those of the following generations thus give rise to a great memory and a questioning of the present. These are placed in relation to the biographies of the ensemble.

The collage of the experiences of the first and following generations portrays the artistic diversity of today's German-Turkish Berlin community and contrasts the current shift to the right and the debate about integration with a differentiated analysis and a self-confident attitude. Musically, the four-piece band around Turgay Ayaydınlı and Aziza A. will make the attitude towards life of the old glamorous Turkish Gazinos tangible for a few nights. With raki, wine and beer we not only experience the greatest, most absurd, saddest or funniest moments of the past and present - the Gazino stars of yesteryear also come on stage. Gazinos are nightclubs with restaurants. In Turkey there are many of them - the big, famous ones from the "golden age", and the less prestigious ones, hidden in narrow, dark alleys. There were also Gazinos in Berlin - but today this tradition is as good as extinct.
