On the afternoon of July 28, 1984, the three large gas tanks of the former Gasanstalt IV in Prenzlauer Berg collapsed. The end of an important Berlin industrial monument was finally sealed.

Before that, there had been numerous civil protests against the blasting and just a few years earlier, the citizens had been promised a creative conversion of the containers and greening of the large area. Instead, with the planning of the Ernst-Thälmann-Park as a residential area, the unity of economic and social policy in the GDR should be once again and impressively demonstrated.
