With this day of activities, the four institutions are sending a clear message in support of open and accessible engagement with art and culture.
This joint event is initially planned as a one-off for 25 October 2026 and has been made possible thanks to a generous private donation. At the same time, the institutions are building on the legacy of Berlin Museum Sunday, which, until the end of 2024, allowed free entry to museums across the city once a month.
“Free admission makes museums accessible to more people. Museum Sunday demonstrated just how many Berliners took advantage of this offer and how naturally a free museum day can become part of the city’s cultural calendar,” say the four institutions. With “Free Admission!”, they aim to remind people of what has been lost with the end of Museum Sunday and to spark a discussion about a permanent solution.
The timing has been deliberately chosen: following the election to the Berlin House of Representatives and whilst the new Senate is being formed, the city’s future budgetary decisions are under discussion – and with them, the priorities of cultural policy. The reintroduction of free Museum Sunday was included in election manifestos across party lines prior to the election.
The initiative is intended as an invitation to politicians to reinstate Museum Sundays. Until this happens, the four museums are working to secure private funding to continue the initiative as a stopgap measure to promote greater cultural participation in west (south) Berlin. The detailed programme will be available shortly on the museums’ websites.
