Opening
From 1939 onwards, almost half of Berlin's Jewish population had to leave their homes and move. People were sublet into apartments where other Jewish tenants already lived. In most cases, the forced housing was the last place of residence before their deportation and murder.
A research project by the Active Museum funded by the Alfred Landecker Foundation has identified a minimum number of 791 houses with forced housing in Berlin. Most of them were in the city centre.
The online exhibition, which has been on display since October 2023 and in which numerous people interested in history and current residents of formerly affected houses have participated, tells the story of 32 selected houses.
Welcome address: Lena Altman, Alfred Landecker Foundation
