When young people conduct
Under the guidance of experienced tutors, the young people learn how to conduct and lead rehearsals. On 8 November at 5 pm, they will showcase their skills in the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) on Hardenbergstraße.
The young people will take part in three intensive rehearsal weekends, supported by a team of experienced tutors. The aim is to nurture the next generation of music educators. Indeed, after the courses, some participants decide to study for a teaching qualification in music. There is a real need for these young people: the shortage of music teachers is already dramatic, and it is set to become even more acute in the near future.
This year, the programme focuses on orchestra, big band and choir. Participants learn not only the basics of conducting, but also teaching methodology, music theory and rehearsal planning. Their knowledge of the repertoire is expanded and their own musicality further developed. Participants must play at least one instrument and be able to read music. The young people form the ensembles from within their own ranks and take turns conducting them. It is a demanding workload. Yet music education degree programmes also place complex demands on students. Sparking young people’s interest in precisely these degree programmes is the focus of the programme, which is now attracting attention beyond the region. “A magnificent project,” declared the *Süddeutsche Zeitung* in an in-depth report.
Katharina Günther-Wünsch, Berlin’s Senator for Education, Youth and Family, explains in her welcome address for the final concert programme: “Musicality and courage, a sense of responsibility and self-confidence – all excellent qualities of our young ensemble leaders! Conducting an orchestra, a band or a choir is challenging both musically and personally. The rewards include the experience of being part of an artistic community, a boost to personal development and plenty of wonderful music.”
The project is under the patronage of Vladimir Jurowski, Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (rsb).
The final concert, featuring works from the classical repertoire, big band standards, pop and choral music, will take place on 8 November at 5 pm in the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) on Hardenbergstraße.
