Butoh and art installation
A collaboration between Gustavo Thomas (Mexico - Butoh) and Belle Shafir (Germany - visual art), with music by Sarah Sarhandi.
‘My work is a sequence of exorcisms. That is the real motivation for what I do. Every morning when I start work, I exorcise a trauma: no, that's not too strong a word. But it's not something you talk about, it's something you do’. (Louise Bourgeois)
A profound ritual of movement and emotion: an artist comes to terms with the haunting presence of his deceased father and is haunted by memories that return at the same time every day. The father's exorcism turns every movement into a personal act of liberation - an exorcism that channels pain, resilience and the longing for redemption.
At the centre of the performance is a fascinating horsehair curtain whose unsettling texture shapes the stage. This scenery is complemented by a bed, also woven from horsehair, which symbolises the tangible heaviness of memories and loss. In this quiet but powerful environment, the artist creates a space of haunting intensity.
Every morning, at 10.00 a.m. sharp, the Butoh dancer enters this charged place. As an exorcist, he encounters the shadows and memories of his relationship with his father - an uncompromising dance with the past that makes the invisible visible.
