Chile heute
On 11 September 1973, the Chilean military staged a coup against the democratically elected, socialist government of Salvador Allende. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Theater der Zeit is publishing a special issue on contemporary theatre, dance, and performance in Chile.
Its editors Verena Lehmkuhl and Amalia Kassai, who work at the Goethe-Institut Chile, and Carlos Medina, cultural representative of the Chilean embassy in Germany who was also active as a theatre maker during his exile in the GDR, will present the latest trends in feminist, socio-political, and digital theatre.
Joined by the authors of the special issue along with other guests, they will also discuss the arts’ ongoing engagement with the coup d’état, the subsequent military dictatorship, the democratic turnaround, and ramifications on theatre and the performing arts.
