A small, remote village somewhere in the heart of Europe, on a rainy, gloomy autumn evening. It has been raining frequently – in fact, almost non-stop – for months now. Alda V., who runs the ‘Zum Alten Kontinent’ hotel with her husband René, hits a boy on the country road whilst returning from a meeting with the village chief – and, to make matters worse, she is heavily intoxicated, as there was plenty of schnapps at the meeting.

The boy is on the run and just wants to move on quickly, but he is injured and cannot be taken to hospital without Alda being found out. So he is treated in the village and hidden away in the hotel. Before long, the other villagers become curious and suspicious, directing their resentment, erotic longings, demands and fantasies of revenge towards the stranger.

The stranger finds himself caught up in a web of diverse and conflicting interests. Moreover, life in the village raises questions for him: Why are there no children living there? By what rules do the few people here live together? Why is everyone so strangely suspicious? He uncovers a dark secret.

Anne-Cécile Vandalem is an actress, director and playwright. With her company ‘Das Fräulein’, she develops her own stories in which tragedy, the grotesque and whimsical humour combine to form a genre all of its own. Her two most recent productions, ‘Tristesses’ and ‘Arctique’, were staged at the FIND festival at the Schaubühne. ‘Die Anderen’ is her first collaboration with the Schaubühne ensemble.

Vandalem crafts a ludicrous, tragicomic and sombre parable about feeling like an outsider, living with unresolved questions, deep-seated traumas and repressed feelings of guilt – and never without subtle, dark humour.
