street music at its finest
The ensembles of the DSO bring the finest chamber music to the public squares, the Spree and the Landwehr Canal for everyone, free of charge and in the open air. Under the title "DSO neighborhood concerts", the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) presents first-class chamber music in the various districts of Berlin on the second weekend in September.
On Saturday, September 9th, DSO ensembles will play in seven public squares during a street music tour, while the next day they will be boating along the banks of the Spree and the Landwehr Canal.
The concept of the "DSO neighborhood concerts" is to make top-class chamber music tangible outside of the concert halls in the open air, accessible to everyone. This wish arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, when musicians of the DSO were first introduced under the motto "Berlin needs music!" Pop-up concerts for people of all ages played all over the city. This idea caught on, and since then, free open-air events have taken place once a year.
On Saturday, September 9th, seven ensembles from the DSO will be out again to make the capital sing at seven different locations. The concerts last about 30 minutes and are timed so that the audience can comfortably enjoy them.
On Sunday, September 10, at 12 noon, musicians will set sail on the "Unkraut" raft at the East Side Gallery. The route leads along the banks of the Spree and the Landwehr Canal to the Urbanhafen, where they will dock around 3 p.m. From 3.30 p.m. the music ship will return to the Insel der Jugend. The casts of the ensembles range from cello duos to string and horn quartets. The programs offer a broad repertoire from Bach and Beethoven to Webern and Megyeri. The public is cordially invited to follow the spectacle from land and to stroll along the waterfront with the DSO.
