After the loss of their daughter, John (Donald Sutherland) and Laura Baxter (Julie Christie) travel to Venice, where John leads the restoration of a church. There they meet two mysterious sisters who claim to have a connection to the dead. Meanwhile, John is plagued by eerie visions and their attempt at recovery takes a dark turn.
