Gaetano Donizetti was one of the most important opera composers of his time and is a representative of the so-called bel canto era. His sacred work, however, is almost unknown.

The Missa di Gloria e Credo lay dormant in archives for almost 150 years before it was performed again in the 1970s, probably for the first time since its premiere in Naples in 1837.

Donizetti probably composed this work to mark the end of a cholera epidemic. It is bursting with melodic inventiveness throughout its entire length.

Together with the 42nd Psalm by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, this work will be performed by the New Choir Alt-Schöneberg on November 17, 2024 at 5 p.m. in the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche.

Mendelssohn's setting of the psalm is essentially without precedent. Psalms have always played a role in liturgical contexts in both Jewish and Christian rites in composed forms. However, Mendelssohn's work breaks this form by involving a large symphonic orchestra.

A concert with two incredibly beautiful compositions:

Gaetano Donizetti: "Missa di Gloria e Credo" and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Psalm 42 op. 42

With: Stephanie Henke (soprano), Judith Kamphues (mezzo-soprano), Andres Moreno Garcia (tenor), N.N. (bass), Neuer Chor-Alt-Schöneberg, neues Konzertorchester Berlin, conductor: Sebastian Brendel
