There is currently much talk of a ‘women’s boom’ in Latin American literature. Indeed – and this perception extends beyond the continent – novels, short stories and essays by women seem to be dominating bookshelves and shop windows all over the world. And yet, in social struggles, it is often the case that, as soon as initial successes are achieved, market forces and private interests come into play. Thus, women’s writing becomes a constant battleground:

in the face of the homogenising and standardising forces of the market, which produce nothing but clichés, female authors respond from the perspective of their personal and individual artistic practice. They challenge their readers to break through the illusion in order to learn to appreciate their poetics in all their complexity.
Brenda Navarro is a Mexican storyteller whose stories explore issues of gender and migration.
Carla Bessa is a Brazilian playwright and storyteller living in Berlin who writes in both languages. Her latest novel, published in German, deals with a brutal act of violence in Rio de Janeiro.
Anke Stelling is a German novelist who has explored themes such as motherhood and care in some of her works.
