Performance
In a run-down nightclub in Vienna’s 15th district, where neon lights flicker like dying stars, resides Die Alte. Some say they are the lost child, born out of a wild orgy between John Waters and Throbbing Gristle. If that’s really true? Who knows – it certainly can’t be proved.
In Sonic Agency, Brandon LaBelle writes: ‘Listening is the basis for a rebellious activity, a coming community’. Based on this idea, Die Alte explores the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and the possibilities of community-building in late capitalism. The result is a creative process that consciously dissolves the separation of work and play. Die Alte creates a bizarre, dream-like world that combines pop and subculture with a healthy dose of humor.
The new performance project by the Zentrum für antidisziplinäre Kunst (ZAK) – a feminist collective with roots in the visual arts, dance and theatre – is being created in collaboration with artist and musician Paul Ebhart. Together they combine improvised music pieces, performance acts, field recordings and video material from the archive of the ZAK community center tête modern to create a mixture of concert, immersive theatre and media installation.
PAUL EBHART lives and works in Vienna (AT) in the transdisciplinary field of sound. He moves between performance, DJ sets and live concerts. In his practice, he focuses on the technical, social and societal conditions in which sound is created, working performatively with body extensions and site-specific interventions. Sound is stored, archived and reproduced in many facets. The Zentrum für antidisziplinäre Kunst (ZAK) was founded in 2020 to facilitate artistic projects and collaborations in various contexts. The collective won the Newcomer Theatre Prize at Vienna’s Theater Drachengasse in 2021 with the play UFO | ultra fett original.Since 2023, ZAK has been using the premises of the former Tête-à-Tête nightclub in Vienna’s 15th district as a multi-layered meeting place for collective interactions and artistic expression.
This process gave rise to the PIECE OF LOVE, an ongoing project comprising a series of open studios, performances, happenings and photo and film sessions. Love becomes the basis of artistic and collective practice at the Zentrum für antidisziplinäre Kunst.
