The English Franciscan William von Baskerville travels with his novice Adson von Melk on a delicate political mission to a Benedictine abbey in northern Italy. Under mysterious circumstances, five monks die there within a few days.

The abbot asks William of Baskerville, known for his astuteness, to clarify the deaths. The furious crime story combines the aesthetics of the Middle Ages with the realism of modern times and creates menacing suspense.
