Against the backdrop of the 80th anniversary of liberation from National Socialism, contemporary witness Irene Bindel reads from her book ‘Wassermilch und Spitzenwein’ at Schloss Biesdorf. An initiative of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office.
Irene Bindel, born in Berlin in 1938 to a Christian mother and a Jewish father, is one of the last active contemporary witnesses of the Second World War in Berlin. Together with her experiences up to the 1970s, her book ‘Wassermilch und Spitzenwein’ spans a Berlin family history of over 100 years. Her father Max is imprisoned by the Nazi regime and never returns. Her mother has to fend for herself with her young daughter Irene. Even in the post-war years, she often encounters resistance, but also receives unexpected help.
Irene Bindel uses her mother's diaries to give a very personal account of the Nazi era and the post-war period. The reading offers a moving insight into individual fates and is also exemplary for many forgotten life stories of those years.
