To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile, the Friends of the Willy-Brandt-Haus are presenting the exhibition "Chile in transition - 50 years later" from September 8th to November 5th, 2023.

Curated in collaboration with Chilean photographer and photojournalist José Giribás Marambio, the exhibition focuses on the coup and its long-lasting effects, as well as the current situation in the country.

On September 11, 1973, the military staged a coup in Chile, ending the brief tenure of hopeful Salvador Allende.
Works by renowned photographers such as Thomas Billhardt, Armindo Cardoso and José Giribás Marambio form the historical aspect of the exhibition "Chile in transition - 50 years later".
They present recordings from Allende's reign and from the years that followed during the military dictatorship. One series dealing with the subject of torture and memory is particularly poignant.

These series are supplemented by current shots by young female photographers from Chile.
A total of twelve artists are presented, their pictures take a look at the social unrest that the country has experienced in recent years. The photographs document the changes in the country and illustrate how Chile is trying to free itself from the aftermath of the dictatorship and break new ground.
