The city of Berlin was all too often at the center of events in the 20th century. Berlin was a democratic, a fascist and a socialist capital. From here, two world wars were carried out into the world, which fell back on the city with great force. The Cold War came to a head in Berlin before it came to a symbolic end here. The city was at the center of world history, just as Rome was two thousand years ago. This is why Berlin is considered the Rome of contemporary history.

In his new book, Hanno Hochmuth takes a topographical and photographic approach to Berlin's past and present. Based on popular attributions of the city, he goes to 51 selected places of remembrance and thus tells the story of Berlin in the 20th century.

Speaker:
Dr. Hanno Hochmuth (ZZF Potsdam, FU Berlin)
