Batila grew up listening to a mixture of urban Congolese music, reggae, rock and pop and processes this early learning into songs that negotiate political issues over gripping rhythms.
The cosmopolitan singer-songwriter is so versatile that no genre could fully describe his music.
His debut album Tatamana, which he recorded with the band The DreamBus in Berlin, Paris and Kinshasa, can be seen as a journey through space and time: It mediates between cities and musical cultures as much as it brings the past into the present to form a forward-looking sound.
