The presentation of Rasheed's artistic work at KW Institute for Contemporary Art is Kameelah Janan Rasheed's first institutional solo exhibition in Berlin. The artist (*1985, US) was awarded the 2022 Prize for Artistic Research by the Ernst Schering Foundation. In her works, Rasheed explores the materiality and legibility of text, writing, and language and the potential of intermedial translations.
Kameelah Janan Rasheed searches for methods of grasping meanings anew and asks how people read and how people themselves want to be read and understood. To this end, she deconstructs and reconstructs the meaning of literary and scientific texts by experimenting, for example, with factors such as syntax and punctuation, but also with the connotation and size of individual words.
Through the ongoing reworking of texts, Rasheed bridges politics and poetry to explore the complexities and shifts in meaning inherent in language and to demonstrate its possibilities.
