Historical photos from the Marienfelde refugee camp 1953-61

Until the Berlin Wall was built, fleeing the GDR was a mass phenomenon. The federal emergency reception center in Marienfelde was the first port of call for the refugees on their way west.

Opened on April 14, 1953, it bundled accommodation and admissions procedures in one place.

With seventeen photographs, the special exhibition in the visitor center shows the everyday life of the people in Marienfelde from the founding of the camp to the construction of the Wall.
