Bus Tour Through Brandenburg

On the banks of the Oder River, just before the Polish border, stands one of the most fascinating architectural complexes outside Berlin—and one that is unique in Northern Europe: the 750-year-old Neuzelle Monastery. The splendor of this 18th-century Baroque-style complex invites visitors to marvel at its daring spatial compositions and a dynamic program of paintings and sculptures, while the reconstructed terraced gardens reveal a beautiful example of a garden from days gone by.

After 200 years, the Cistercian monks have once again established a permanent monastic life there—so successfully, in fact, that due to the growing number of monks, construction of a new monastery complex is now underway. The organizers would like to share this remarkable development with you, offering the opportunity to tour the historic buildings in Neuzelle as well as to learn about the plans for a new building designed for a forested plot of land.

A truly heavenly century-long project.

Bold, utopian living spaces also emerged in this region in the 20th century, such as the planned city of Eisenhüttenstadt. Living and working around a single workplace was an innovative challenge; could this succeed in the young GDR, and what remains of it after industrial transformation? At the very least, a remarkable and well-maintained urban culture from the early post-war period, which offered residents many opportunities in terms of infrastructure and comfortable living conditions. Perhaps an incentive for those tired of big cities to now participate in the revitalization of such projects?
