premiere
The retelling of Sophocles' ancient tragedy asks how the actions of an individual can become a political movement.
Ismene has some pretty big shoes to fill. Everyone knows the name of her older sister: Antigone. Antigone, who stood up for her ideals, who stood up against state power and had to pay for it with her life.
But who is Ismene? Ismene herself, who becomes the main character in "Antigone's Legacy", asks herself this too. And what concerns her most is: what is expected of her?
How can Ismene carry on Antigone's spirit of resistance and maintain the vision of a more just society? Facing up to her sister's legacy carries a great responsibility and can also be an opportunity for political change.
"Antigone's Legacy" was commissioned by the playwright and poet Athena Farrokhzad for the Theater an der Parkaue. Farnaz Arbabi, director and artistic director of the children's and youth theater "Unga Klara" in Stockholm, is premiering the piece.
Inspired by women in resistance movements around the world, the Swedish-Iranian team presents a powerful, poetic plea for female solidarity.
