Berlin is a water city. All of Berlin's bodies of water add up to 6.6% of its total area. A paradise for waterfowl. Near-natural waters with wide reed belts, bays, islands, wetlands are rather rare in Berlin.

The large lake in the Britzer Garten with its 10 hectares and its near-natural design has become an important feeding and breeding area for various water birds in Berlin. Mute swan, mallard, white rail, the most common waterfowl species in the city, can be observed here. Great crested grebes, gray herons, gray geese, tufted ducks as well. From time to time even kingfishers. Also the reed dwellers like pond and reed warbler are presented.

The exhibition of the Freilandlabor Britz presents more than 20 bird species and their habits in individual portraits. The lake habitat with its ecological niches and also the problem of feeding water birds is described.

The exhibition can be seen from May 2, 2021 to August 15, 2021 in the outdoor exhibition area of the Environmental Education Center in the Britz Garden.
