48 HOURS NEUKÖLLN is a forum for artistic projects of all sections of the Berlin art scene. Since its founding in 1999, 48 HOURS NEUKÖLLN has established itself as a role model as Berlin's largest free art festival. The artistic works created here act as impulses far beyond Berlin-Neukölln, relate to questions of general society and promote a sustainable exchange with the international art scene.
In 2019, the 48 hours of Neukölln are looking far ahead into a future that at that time will have already been a thing of the past. Our annual theme Futur III sets a timeline. We are concerned with the paradox of a future that is retrospectively anticipated and anticipated. At the same time something about the hopes, expectations and claims of the now is expressed. At the present time, we are entangled in complex circumstances and working on a seemingly no-alternative status quo.
We recognize developments and changes in retrospect alone: the successfully constructed causal chains of progress have a reassuring effect. Looking to the future, on the other hand, is shaped by predictions that speak of threats and decline. In order to constructively break through this paralysis with artistic means, we are forging a visionary arc into new times. It is necessary to examine "how we would have lived". Or "who we have become". Using the bulky, non-standard grammatical tense Futur III, the 48 hours Neukölln become a future laboratory. We are looking for clues, wish for artistic prognoses or daring inventions. Futur III makes it possible to take a playful-thinking position that goes beyond naive wishes and one-dimensional predictions.
The potential of thinking and working in Futur III is to think of art from the other end. We expect a festival that anticipates the consequences of future artistic and social actions and makes them tangible for everyone. At the end of this festival edition, we will know what obstacles have been overcome.
