Christmas Market Tips for the Second Weekend of Advent

Traditionally, St Nicholas brings apples, nuts and almonds: but this second Advent weekend has a few more culinary delights in store for you. Feast your way through the Merry Markthalle and sample international festive cuisine from Brazil, Norway and England. In addition to plenty of inspiration for your festive menu, you will also find beautiful gift ideas at numerous neighbourhood and craft markets - locally made or even from all over the world at the Christmas bazaar in the atrium of the Federal Foreign Office. Whether you want to discover Berlin's neighbourhoods or satisfy your wanderlust - these Christmas markets will enchant you.

Tip 1: Christmas feasting in the Merry Markthalle

Markthalle Neun is a real classic on the Berlin food scene. That's why the Merry Markthalle should not be missed here. On 7 December, it will be transformed into a Christmas gourmet paradise. The international Christmas specialities, traditional treats such as gingerbread and roasted almonds and the organic wines will delight you.

You will also find a large selection of handicrafts - perfect for gift-giving if you are still missing a Christmas present or two. The Merry Markthalle is committed to both sustainability and social responsibility. The products are often handmade and come from small manufacturers.

Tip 2: Experience diversity & community at the Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market

The Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market is all about neighbourliness and charity. Charitable and non-profit organisations, clubs and associations invite you to get to know other cultures. At the stalls, you will find arts and crafts and culinary delights from all over the world. Perfect to warm you up from the inside in cold temperatures. The proceeds go to charitable projects.

Tip 3: Christmas bazaar in the atrium of the Federal Foreign Office

You can find truly extraordinary gifts from all over the world at the Christmas bazaar organised by the Förderkreis Eine Welt in the Federal Foreign Office. In the festively lit atrium of the Federal Foreign Office, souvenirs from all over the world and artefacts from everyday diplomatic life are offered for sale. Since 1978, the organisation has been collecting donations for worldwide projects to help people help themselves through this bazaar, so that every purchase does good at the same time.

Tip 4: Enjoy Brazilian delicacies at the Roda de Feijoada

Enjoy Brazilian festive cuisine at the Roda de Feijoada. Enjoy vegan feijoada (bean stew), juicy grilled picanha, crispy pastel (stuffed pastries), savoury and vegan coxinha and sweet classics such as brigadeiro and rabanada, while live samba music, Brazilian DJs, a family programme and the "Big Noel" Ronan Bonagamba provide Christmas cheer with Brazilian flair.

You can experience the English Christmas tradition up close at the Christmas market at St George's Church. Specialities from England, Christmas carols and traditional handicrafts from Great Britain. look forward to a charming British festive atmosphere and experience a touch of English Christmas culture. There will also be a festive programme with fairy tales and theatre for the little ones.

Welcome to the Norwegian Christmas Market. All Norwegians and friends of Norwegian culture will find a colourful market of food, specialities and products from the north. You will find woollen blankets and knitwear from Norway, as well as typical household products. A must for all Scandinavia fans.

Tip 7: Things get really spicy at the Berlin Chilli Fest

It's cold outside. And what could be better than eating something really spicy? At the chilli eating competition or a hot wing challenge, for example. In addition to the spicy competitions, over 30 suppliers of hot sauces, snacks and other culinary delights await you. Probably the spiciest Christmas market in all of Berlin!

This Christmas market on the historic site of a former crematorium combines art, culture and culinary delights in a unique atmosphere. At the stalls, you will find handmade and upcycled products from Berlin manufacturers and local designers. You can also look forward to a varied film and concert programme, workshops, children's activities and guided tours of the former crematorium. admission is free; you should book the historical tours in advance.

Tip 9: Visit the Christmas party at the Berlin animal shelter

On the second weekend of Advent, Berlin's animal shelter will be decorating for a Christmas party for the animals. Here you will find handmade gift ideas for animal lovers and your favourite four-legged friends. The catering will focus on vegan and vegetarian street food. Of course, there will also be waffles and mulled wine. And you might even find a new family member during one of the animal shelter tours.

Tip 9: Cool - and unusual location typical of Berlin: Oberschöner Christmas market

The festive Oberschöner Christmas Market is all about arts and crafts. Artisans present their products in the richly decorated historic industrial hall of the MaHalla. In addition to the sustainable gastronomic offer - fresh from the neighbourhood - you will also be offered a Christmas cultural programme. Look forward to live music and a breathtaking fire show!

Tip 10: Travel back to the Middle Ages at Winter Life in the Düppel Museum Village

Games people, fire artists and craftsmen such as blacksmiths, glass bead makers and bronze casters ensure a lively market atmosphere at the winter market in the Düppel museum village. Handmade ceramics, jewellery and recycled furniture await you at the stalls. Children can try out historical games and visit the village's medieval animals. Warm up with mulled wine, hot apple juice and delicious soup and discover this authentically reconstructed medieval village.

Tip 11: Arts and crafts markets on the 2nd weekend in Advent

Far away from the Christmas hustle and bustle of Berlin's main shopping streets, you'll find small, fine Christmas markets in almost every neighbourhood. Here you can immerse yourself in a lively neighbourhood and find lovingly decorated stalls with local arts and crafts, homemade items, jewellery and even a little junk. Mulled wine, sweets and savoury treats are of course also available. Many of the small markets also offer a colourful children's and music programme or invite you to join in Advent carol singing. As many of the markets only take place on one weekend, we have put together an overview for this second Advent weekend for you here:
