As early as ten years before the Nazi dictatorship, a pogrom took place in Berlin’s Scheunenviertel on 5 November 1923. Berlin was in the throes of an inflationary crisis and, when relief payments were cut off, Eastern European Jews were made scapegoats.
Attacks were carried out against them, their shops and their homes. Whilst the police remained inactive for a long time, Jewish former soldiers attempted to prevent the situation from escalating. On this tour, you will learn about the background to the pogrom and the heroic defence mounted by members of the Reichsbund of Jewish Front-Line Soldiers.
Start: In front of the New Synagogue, Berlin
