The piece moves between routine and ritual, energetic labour and the language of dance, joy and a horror trip – inspired by raves and the gentle discipline of repeating something until it ceases to be one thing and begins to become something else.
Using a contact microphone that amplifies repetitive steps, Ismael Yakout processes the sounds live through a modular system, creating a noisy, hypnotic soundtrack that flows back into the dance. Body and sound reinforce one another, generating rhythm and creating a mysterious space.
What happens when attention persists beyond the comfort zone, beyond boredom? Is it loving devotion or rigid, forced labour? What lives in the pauses, in the in-between?
